The last Friday of every month, the Bayswater team likes to come together at the end of the day for something called ‘News & Booze’. Someone in the company volunteers to do some kind of ‘educational’ presentation (usually interactive, always fun, and a great way of bringing everyone together), we share department news and enjoy a beer or a glass of wine.
For our last ‘News & Booze’, myself and Sarah thought it might be fun to mix things up a little and raise some money for a good cause, and so we arranged the ‘Blooming Big Bayswater Tea Party’. A fundraising initiative of Marie Curie Cancer Care, we decided to take up the challenge of baking some confectionary goodies for our fellow workmates and encourage them to give to a good cause.
The surprise hit of the tea had to be the jam tarts (a retro classic), while the wheat-free brownies (Sarah’s creation, herself wheat allergic) went like…well, hot cakes. Or hot brownies. You get the picture. Pots of teas made and cake eating underway, the challenge was put to the Bayswater Team (and the team does love a challenge), to decorate a ‘blank canvas cake’ (oh okay, a Victoria Sponge covered in white icing) inspired by our company ‘Bayswater’.
The results were simply astounding. No really, they had to be seen to be believed. Mark, Lucy and Marilaina were inspired by our Editor-in-Chief’s recent filming of the Finish Dishwashter Tablet advert. They created Alison from left over cupcakes ingeniously using plastic forks for arms. The Editorial Department, Nadia, Mike and Stephanie, upheld their creative reputation by creating a rather dazzling sparkling cake, again focusing on our Editor-in-Chief, Alison Cork, and her bargain hunting principals of finding ‘value and quality’. Jon, Lisa and Gabby decided to focus on our ‘Bargain Hunter’ column which appears every Saturday in the Telegraph, icing the ‘T’ of the Telegraph masthead rather beautifully in blue on top of the cake. Finally, Rupert, Laura and Steph went for a slightly more unusual route. Inspired by the JLS hit, they iced the phrase ‘The Club Is Alive With The Sound of BGAS’ (BGAS stands for Bargain Guide Autumn Special).
Everyone’s a winner of course but the award for best cake went to Team Editorial (it wasn’t a fix, honest!), and a great time was had by all. Good to know that tea and scones can have such a positive result in raising money for a great cause like Marie Curie Cancer Care.
